Popes Produce is a 700m² urban farm tucked away amidst suburbia in the northern Illawarra. Run by the delightful Sarah and Ben Anderson, the farm is a labour of love and a desire to spread knowledge of sustainability and growing your own food among the community.

After spending 12 months traveling with their young children and working on organic farms all over the world, they decided to establish their own version in the Illawarra back in 2011. Prior to the Andersons moving in, the property had been in the same family for over 100 years and had a history of market gardening. The farm has a beautiful synthesis of thriving and colourful crops, busy bees, contented chickens and the odd eastern bearded dragon roaming around happily.

As well as supplying fresh produce to the local Flame Tree Co-op at Thirroul and a local vegetable box delivery wholesaler, Popes Produce offers weekly veggie boxes to individual customers. The boxes can be collected direct from the farm on specific days.

Sarah’s passion for edible gardens has lead her into other ventures and as such she runs on site workshops for small groups as well as a private garden consultation service for those who want to pursue their own gardening projects at home.

WEEKLY VEGETABLE BOXES

Looking for an alternative to the big supermarkets? Want to eat organic vegetables, but can’t afford to?

At Popes Produce, we offer a weekly vegetable box that contains a variety of seasonal produce for $20 that can be collected from our farm in Woonona. All of our produce is grown without the use of chemicals or pesticides, so while we aren’t certified organic, we are also able to keep our costs down by not paying to maintain certification. This means that our produce offers all the same benefits as certified organic, but is an affordable option for those who are conscious of their health and the environment. The best part is that your vegetables are picked that same day, so you’re getting fresh, seasonal, local food that hasn’t had to travel for weeks or more before getting to the supermarket.

PRIVATE CONSULTATION ON EDIBLE GARDENING

Many people want to set up a vegetable garden at home, but sn’t know where to start. Many others think its not an option because their backyard isn’t suitable or they live in a unit. Sarah is passionate about helping people to grown their own food at home and offers a one on one consultation service to help design and create your own edible garden.

With qualifications in permaculture design, Sarah has a keen eye for maximising the space you have available and will visit your property and discuss what you are hoping to achieve to customise your design. She offers ongoing support and consultation as you embark on your journey as an edible gardener.

SUSTAINABLE GARDENING & COOKING WORKSHOPS

Popes Produce offer a range of half day workshops, which we run at our farm in Woonona. Some of our popular workshops include an Introduction to Gardening and our bread making lesson, where you will learn how to make flat bread from scratch, then create pizzas for lunch. Our workshops are run in small groups and provide a fantastic way to learn a new skill, while getting to know like-minded members of our community.
