WHAT DOES DOG REHAB AND HYDROTHERAPY INVOLVE?

The use of hydrotherapy in injury rehabilitation is common when it comes to humans.  Exercising in water allows range of movement in a non-load bearing environment. The added resistance of water has great benefits for building strength in a controlled manner.

Canine hydrotherapy is becoming a popular tool among vets who are managing post-surgical or injury rehabilitation, as well as having proven benefits in pain management, easing symptoms of arthritis and managing weight.

Water Walkies is a purpose built canine hydrotherapy centre in Port Kembla, near Wollongong. Staff have undergone extensive training to become qualified canine hydrotherapists. They use tailored exercise programs to achieve your pet’s outcomes and work closely with your veterinarian as needed. Dog hydrotherapy may involve sessions in the custom made, heated pool (always with a hydrotherapist in the water with them) or use of the underwater treadmill.

BENEFITS OF DOG HYDROTHERAPY

Hydrotherapy is a controlled form of exercise that can be used for pre and post surgical rehabilitation, weight management, pain relief and improving fitness as well as water confidence. The effect of the warm water promotes blood circulation and assists with muscle relaxation, so can have a dramatic effect on easing pain and improving mobility. Heated water and the buoyancy it provides allows for movements in water that wouldn’t be possible on land.

Veterinary consent is a requirement for all hydrotherapy treatment, even for a fun swim session. This enables the hydrotherapist to have all the information around your furry companion’s health conditions, behaviour and their clinical history. It also allows for identifying any contraindications for hydrotherapy.
